Commissioned Graduation Portrait
This commissioned oil portrait of Noor was created as a graduation gift following completion of graduate studies in art. Having studied with me for approximately five years after graduating from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, I had the opportunity to observe her development from an abstract painter into an exceptionally gifted realist artist of unusual sensitivity and insight.
Years later, after completing graduate studies at Tufts University, her family commissioned this portrait to commemorate not only academic achievement, but also years of artistic growth and dedication.
Because I had known Noor for many years—as both student and artist—I was given unusual freedom in determining the mood, composition, and character of the portrait. Rather than emphasizing overt expression, I sought to portray quieter qualities that seemed most essential to her personality: introspection, intelligence, restraint, and thoughtful observation.
The pose, subdued expression, and delicate handling were intended to create a contemplative atmosphere. At the same time, the dramatic color relationships, sari, and compositional contrasts were designed to give the portrait visual presence without sacrificing subtlety.
This painting represents more than a likeness. It reflects years of artistic development, mentorship, and the transition from student to accomplished professional artist.
