Selecting the right portrait artist is your most important decision.

My portrait is the way that people will remember me.

- Edward Cardinal Egan

Commissioning an oil portrait painting may or may not be new to you. Whatever your level of experience, Marvin Mattelson is there to guide and support you through the entire process – from initial planning through framing the finished portrait. Marvin fully appreciates how important this painting is to you. His goal is for each oil portrait he creates to be his best ever, and unlike many in the field, he doesn't treat portraiture, his true passion, as just another business opportunity. It's his intent to craft a truly unique work of art that fully represents the spirit and likeness of his subjects.

My portrait is the way I will be remembered.

Selecting the most appropriate artist to paint your portrait is the best way to ensure that you will have a genuine masterpiece to be cherished for generations. Not all portrait painters are created equal. Marvin's artistry, skill, passion, knowledge and years of experience put him in the forefront of contemporary realist artists. Trust your eyes and not the opinion of someone trying to make a sale.

Marvin always recommends, if at all possible, to view an original painting by any portrait painter you are considering for your commission. Many artists' websites reproduce work in small sizes in order to make their portraits look more refined. That's why on this site there are many enlarged details so you can see his high level of craftsmanship. What really separates Marvin's portraits from the works of others is the depth and lifelike essence that can only be experienced when seeing an original oil portrait. Up close,  you can see the brushstrokes, but when you step back, it feels like you are standing before a living being.

Direct communication with a portrait artist, from the very beginning, is your best guarantee for satisfaction.

Marvin's a consummate professional. We really clicked. I couldn't put into words exactly what I wanted, but Marvin was able to create a masterpiece beyond my wildest dreams, as good, if not better, than anything I'd see in a museum.

A portrait is a collaboration between an artist and their client. There needs to be a solid line of communication. From initial contact to finished painting, you'll be communicating solely with Marvin Mattelson, unlike the litany of mazes you need to navigate when trying to handle the simplest of tasks in today's world. Why deal with assistants, intermediaries, agents or sales representatives, when you can communicate directly with Marvin throughout every phase of your portrait's creation? It's the best way to avoid miscommunication and unfulfilled expectations.

Oil portraiture is Marvin's life-long passion, therefore, his is the only brush that will ever touch your canvas. He doesn't use assistants to work on his canvases, nor does he sub-contract to other artists or studios. Some claim that since the old masters used assistants, it's appropriate and justified, but Marvin begs to differ. He feels that if you commission him, it's his responsibility alone to fulfill that obligation and he clearly spells it out on your written contract.  During every aspect of your portrait's creation, you will be interacting and communicating with him directly.

Marvin is a perfectionist and his own toughest critic. Before Marvin considers a portrait finished, he must be fully satisfied, because, as a student of human nature, he knows that after you hang your portrait, if you discover any flaws, that's all you'll see. To avoid this from ever occurring, each portrait he creates must pass the most critical of tests, it has to live up to his high standards.

When it comes to commissioning a truly memorable oil portrait, it's important to choose an artist whose main interest is in creating a great work of art. Viewing Marvin's oil portrait portfolio, you can see that each painting has a unique composition and color scheme. It's Marvin's intention, that each and every client is fullly satisfied and has a piece of art which will provide a lifetime of joy and satisfaction.
