Portrait of Julie A. Johnson
Julie Johnson is Dean Emeritus of the University of Florida College of Pharmacy, having served as dean from 2013 through 2022. Internationally recognized for her work in cardiovascular pharmacogenomics, genomic medicine, and precision medicine implementation, Dr. Johnson has authored more than 330 peer-reviewed publications and secured over $50 million in research funding as principal investigator.
In creating this portrait, Marvin Mattelson sought not only to convey Dr. Johnson’s accomplishments as a researcher and academic leader, but also to reflect the thoughtful, grounde presence that shaped her leadership and professional identity. At Dr. Johnson’s request, the portrait was situated outdoors to reflect her lifelong appreciation for nature and the university campus environment.
The composition carefully integrates the surrounding landscape with the figure itself. The organic rhythms of the trees, foliage, and natural light create an atmosphere that feels both scholarly and contemplative, while the darker passages of clothing anchor the composition and direct attention toward the sitter’s face and expression. Every element—from the placement of the figure to the orchestration of values and surrounding forms—was designed to reinforce both psychological presence and compositional unity.
Under Dr. Johnson’s leadership, the University of Florida College of Pharmacy experienced extraordinary growth. The Pharm.D. curriculum was redesigned, faculty size increased dramatically, research funding expanded nearly fourfold, and the college rose from #14 to #5 in U.S. News & World Report rankings. The college also achieved national distinction for diversity and inclusion, with substantial increases in underrepresented minority enrollment during her tenure.
Although grounded in direct observation and likeness, the portrait ultimately seeks to convey something beyond professional achievement alone. Through its integration of figure, environment, and atmosphere, the painting reflects both intellectual accomplishment and the enduring human presence behind it.
