Family Portrait Commission

Portrait of Jack and Joanne Davis
Paul Davis commissioned this double portrait of his parents on the occasion of his father’s retirement from the business he had founded. Beyond commemorating an important milestone, the portrait was intended to preserve a sense of family continuity and allow future generations the opportunity to experience a personal connection with their family history.
Marvin Mattelson approached the composition with particular attention to both psychological presence and structural harmony. The pose was carefully designed to accommodate the difference in height between the two figures while reinforcing their emotional connection. Joanne’s hand resting gently on her husband’s shoulder serves not only as an affectionate gesture, but also as an important compositional device that visually links the figures while softening the larger dark shapes created by the clothing.
The restrained neutral palette allows the nuanced flesh tones and subtle facial expressions to remain the painting’s emotional focus. Rather than relying on dramatic effects or excessive detail, the portrait achieves its presence through careful control of value relationships, edge hierarchy, and quiet observation.
Although the composition appears natural and understated, every element was carefully orchestrated in service of unity, dignity, and permanence. The resulting portrait reflects Marvin Mattelson’s belief that a painted portrait should function not merely as a record of appearance, but as a lasting emotional and psychological presence capable of carrying meaning across generations.
