Joseph M. Otting
At the portrait’s official unveiling ceremony, former Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin spoke about the qualities that had made Otting his choice for Comptroller of the Currency: an unconventional approach, an ability to assess a situation clearly, identify the optimal solution, and act decisively.
When he spoke, Otting remarked, with a certain amount of pride, that it was probably the shortest photo session Marvin had ever conducted. Once Otting saw the expression, pose, and lighting he liked, that was it. There was no reason to keep searching. True to his manner, he looked at the possibilities, recognized the best solution, and made his decision.
His clarity and focus became the basis of the portrait. What Marvin captured intuitively turned out to be the very qualities that have defined Otting’s career.
Rather than surrounding him with a great deal of background information, Marvin kept the composition focused. The seal of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency is present, but deliberately pushed into the background. Otting steps forward.
