Portrait of Tracy and Hayden
This portrait presented Marvin with an opportunity to innovate upon one of the oldest motifs in Western art: the relationship between a mother and her infant child.
The theme of maternal devotion is subtly alluded to through Tracy’s affectionate gesture of touching Hayden’s toes. Because Hayden is the primary focal point of the composition, he is rendered in a higher value key and dressed in an eggshell blue outfit that contrasts against the darker warm analogous colors and geometric shapes that surround him.
The inclusion of the Chinese armoire and stacked woven baskets introduces a subtle Eastern influence that is balanced against the contemporary couch and drapery. These elements were chosen not only for their individual character, but also for their contribution to the overall design of the painting.
The repetition of elliptical forms—the armoire hardware, the baskets, and the shapes of the two faces—helps unite the foreground and background into a cohesive composition. Although the painting appears natural and effortless, every element was carefully considered in service of both visual harmony and the emotional connection between mother and child.
