Posthumous Portrait Commission

Portrait of Sir Humphrey Cripps

Visionary founder of Velcro Industries
Oil Colour on Linen Canvas
44 x 32 inches.

The late Sir Humphrey Cripps was a renowned businessman, philanthropist, and avid art collector. After acquiring the patent for Velcro, he transformed the company from a niche industrial manufacturer into an internationally recognized household brand.

This three-quarter-length posthumous portrait was commissioned for display at Velcro’s headquarters in Manchester, New Hampshire. The painting depicts Sir Humphrey on the day he received the Queen’s Bachelor Medal from Queen Elizabeth II, conferring knighthood upon him in recognition of his charitable and philanthropic contributions.

Although the photographic reference provided useful information about Sir Humphrey’s appearance and setting, the surrounding architectural environment within the inner quadrangle of Buckingham Palace was visually unsuitable for a formal portrait. The background was dark, indistinct, and compositionally unappealing.

Believing that a portrait of this significance required a setting equal to the stature of the subject, Marvin conducted extensive research and assembled reference material from multiple sources in order to reconstruct a more elegant and compelling interpretation of the location.

Particular attention was given to the distinctive architectural details unique to the inner quadrangle of Buckingham Palace, including the characteristic columns, sconces, and stone surfaces. The resulting setting preserves the authenticity of the location while elevating its visual and symbolic presence within the composition.

Painting a successful posthumous portrait involves far more than mechanically reproducing a photograph in paint. Bringing a subject convincingly to life requires not only technical ability, but also a profound understanding of visual relationships, atmosphere, design, and psychological presence. In this portrait, Marvin sought to create not merely a record of appearance, but an image worthy of Sir Humphrey Cripps’s legacy and accomplishments.
