Portrait of Pat and Jen

A Conceptual Contemprary Oil Portrait
Oil Colour on Linen Canvas
40 x 44 inches.

When Patrick and Jennifer visited Marvin’s studio to discuss their portrait, they arrived with many different ideas but no clear direction. As the conversation continued, it became apparent that a more traditional portrait was not what they were looking for.

Everything changed as they were leaving the studio. Jennifer stopped in front of one of Marvin’s surreal illustrations from his years as an illustrator and immediately connected with it. Describing themselves as an “out-of-the-box couple,” she suggested that perhaps their portrait should be equally unconventional.

The comment immediately sparked an idea. Rather than creating a traditional double portrait, Marvin began developing a symbolic composition that reflected the playful dynamic he had observed between them. Patrick became associated with the floating red balloons, representing a constant stream of ideas and possibilities. Jennifer’s role emerged more subtly through the oversized safety pin attached to her blouse, a humorous reference to her tendency to carefully evaluate those ideas before embracing them.

Marvin wanted the portrait to exist somewhere between reality and imagination. The couple appear seated against a wall, yet the wall itself becomes a painted sky through which the balloons drift. The shifting relationship between illusion and reality allowed the portrait to reflect not only their appearance, but also the creative and unconventional way they approached life.

Although the composition incorporates symbolism and surrealist elements, Marvin never lost sight of the portrait’s primary objective. The clothing, color relationships, and arrangement of the figures were carefully chosen to keep attention focused on the likenesses while supporting the larger visual idea.

For Marvin, the portrait remains a rare opportunity to combine the disciplines of portraiture and imaginative illustration, creating a painting that is as much about personality and relationships as it is about physical appearance.
