Executive Portrait Commission

Portrait of Fang Fenglei
Fang Fenglei is a highly successful businessman who played an important role in helping bridge the financial markets between China and the United States. Marvin Mattelson was selected over many accomplished portrait painters in both countries to create this commissioned portrait, for which Fang traveled to the United States specifically to pose.
This half-length portrait with hands was created for display in Fang’s home in Shanghai, China. Because the portrait was intended for a personal environment rather than a corporate office, traditional Chinese attire was chosen in place of Western business clothing.
The composition is intentionally restrained and elegant. The soft tonal transitions within the luxurious silk fabrics create a sense of refinement and quiet sophistication, while the sculptural rendering of the flesh tones gives the sitter a powerful sense of living presence. The hand holding the eyeglasses serves an important compositional function, interrupting the larger shapes of the clothing and redirecting the viewer’s attention upward toward the face.
Particular attention was devoted to the rendering of the silk textures, folded fabric, pocket square, and subtle reflected light, all of which contribute to the portrait’s atmosphere of calm authority and understated strength.
The resulting portrait balances cultural specificity, psychological presence, and compositional harmony, creating an image that feels both intimate and dignified.
