Commissioning a portrait painting is a significant undertaking. A portrait will last for generations, years after the family photos have long since faded. Regardless of the degree of complexity of the painting you commission, Marvin Mattelson always strives to create an heirloom quality portrait masterpiece of the highest standards.
Since a portrait painting is a collaboration between patron and artist, the first step is to establish a dialogue and determine the scope of the painting you desire. Marvin will do his very best to accommodate both your vision and your budget. When you commission Marvin to paint your portrait you are dealing directly with the artist. There are no intermediaries and this ensures your communication is direct and there will be no misinterpretation or misrepresentation. If anything, your expectations will be exceeded. Please contact Marvin directly to discuss the portrait you envision.
Portrait fees start at $5000. The price is based on the following criteria: the number of people or pets in the painting; how much of each subject is to be depicted; the size of the actual painting itself; the intricacy of clothing, jewelry and props; and the complexity of the background setting. Please be aware that the price for a vignette portrait is based on having the subject come to Marvin's studio for either live sittings or for a reference photo session.
Travel expenses, framing costs, shipping fees and any state or city sales tax, where applicable, are additional. A one third non-refundable deposit is required when you sign the contract. A second payment of one third is due when you approve the color study. When the completed portrait is delivered and it meets with your approval, the balance is due.
The following cost estimates are based on approximately life sized, single figure, oil portraits, painted against simple tonal backgrounds. For posthumous portraits an additional 50% will be added to the cost below. Thank you for your interest.

| Portrait Vignettes |
This is a less formal solution to portraiture then a fully resolved painting. The face is completely developed but the majority of the painting varies in its degree of finish. It conveys a spontaneous quality which works well in children's portraits.
